Aontas opens in the aftermath of a robbery gone wrong. Lights are flashing around the targeted Credit Union in a village in Co Antrim. Bodies are bloodied. One is carried out, lifeless on a trolley. How did we get here? Gradually, a story involving betrayal, family ties, funerals, cash, corporate corruption, casual misogyny and unexpected gun wielding is teased out. Featuring a superb predominantly female ensemble cast, Damian McCann’s Irish language feature is a dazzling noir jigsaw puzzle, its narrative chopped up and revealed in incidental chapters. The wit and invention on display here is a delight, and there’s more pleasure in piecing it all together. - Michael Hayden
