The Other Mother
The Other Mother
A loving mother chats to her son, he’s got some news, he’s bought a field, he’s going to build a house, he’s moving up in the world and he’s bringing his mother with him. Worried about the source of her son’s new found wealth, the mother suppresses her concerns when her son reassures her his good fortune is the result of a favour done for a friend.
The son will not explain any further and the conversation is left at that. In truth the son has betrayed his best friend to a drug dealer in return for the money to buy the land. The betrayal has not gone unnoticed by the local community and when she is confronted by a neighbour about her son's actions - rumours of a beating and a dead boy - the mother sets out to prove her son wasn’t really responsible and hasn’t done anything wrong.
For a brief moment, the mother is hopeful everyone involved can move on when the missing boy is found alive but her relief is shattered when she discovers her son, unable to to live with his terrible choice has taken his own life. Later, as she mourns, the mother is given a chance to ask for forgiveness of her son when she is visited by the mother of the betrayed friend who has come to share in her terrible loss.
