Dún Do Bhéal (Shut Your Mouth)
Dún do Bhéal (Shut Your Mouth) follows Croía, a stubborn young woman who returns to her childhood home in an Irish-speaking region of Ireland for her birthday. Having lived in London for many years, Croía now speaks only English which creates immediate tension between her and her headstrong father, Cillian. While her mother Caoimhe is simply glad to have her daughter home, Cillian has other fixations.
Still ruminating on an incident that happened years ago between Croía and their elderly farmer neighbour, Cillian refuses to let the past rest. His insistence that Croía should have reported what happened reignites old wounds, and a heated argument sends the father and daughter out of the house and into the local pub at Caoimhe’s insistence.
Emboldened by alcohol, Croía attempts to broker a deal with her father: if she helps him get revenge on their neighbour, he is never to mention the incident again. What begins as a childish act of vandalism quickly spirals, exposing the pair’s conflicting ideas of justice and pushing their already fragile relationship to breaking point.
A dark Irish comedy, Dún do Bhéal explores the futility of revenge, the complexities of father-daughter relationships, and the lasting impact of silence. Through themes of family, language, and cultural identity, the film confronts the realities of sexual assault and the pressures surrounding reporting it.
