EARLYBIRD
Ireland, 1995
Eamon (Andrew Scott) is a teenager at a crossroads in his life. His obligation to his eel fisherman father (Donal Donnelly) is dwindling amidst tensions over fishing rights with neighbour Ben Moran (Vass Anderson) and the fact Eamon has fallen in love with Moran’s daughter Una (Fiona Molony). Deaths haunt both families, with Eamon’s mum gone and Una’s brother killed fighting for the US Army in Korea. Yet, with feuds rumbling and work scarce, America is offering itself as an escape route for Eamon. Cathal Black’s adaption of a story by John McGahan is a tense, beautifully rendered drama and has been restored as part of the Irish Film Institute’s Digital Restoration Project funded by Screen Ireland. It features Scott in his first film role, and proves his captivating screen presence was striking and immediate. - Michael Hayden
