Ready or Not

Ireland, 2025

Summer, 1998. On a Dublin housing estate, Katie (Ruby Conway Dunne), Danni (Molly Byrne) and Sarah (Alicia Weafer) are a trio of pals keen to grow up fast. They have different attitudes to love and romance, and are all curious about sex, provoking interest from boys and gossip among rivals. As teenage hormones percolate, dark events at a house party test the bonds of friendship and threaten to change lives dramatically. Director Claire Frances Byrne has won awards for short films Amazing Grace (2021) and Waiting Day (2023) at the Irish Film Festival London, and her vivid, vibrant and evocative debut feature more than delivers on the promise she has shown. Dealing with issues concerning sex and consent inevitably lead to some uncomfortable scenes, though Ready Or Not sparkles with frank honesty, humour and compassion. - Michael Hayden
